Dish of the Day: Garlic Chicken

If you know me, you know I love food. Thailand has created a perfect opportunity to fully immerse myself into a cuisine that while not entirely unfamiliar, is completely different from my own.

While I will always have a soft place in my heart for Thai Sookdee (in Evanston), I wanted to show off some of my favorite things I have been eating in Nan. Every once in a while I will post some food pics* that I took and a brief description of the food!

*PSA: Thai food is very brown and not always so pretty so I apologize for any pictures that do not look as appetizing as the dishes taste!img_1260

Since I ate here today, here is a picture of one of my favorite foods here. This is garlic roasted chicken, papaya salad with sticky rice. The chicken is stuffed with cloves of garlic and then roasted on a rotisserie. They serve it with a thick, sweet tamarind sauce. We eat it with our hands and get sticky tamarind sauce and bits of chicken everywhere, under my fingernails and definitely on my shirt. So worth it. My favorite is making a little sandwich with bits of sticky rice laid flat, some sauce and pieces of chicken on top.


The papaya salad is fresh and compliments the sweet and hot chicken with the crunch of raw papaya and zip of vinegar. All together the meal costs about 80 baht or a little more than $2.

  1. Nice post. Your dinner looks delicious Kara. We make green papaya salad here in the summer when the papayas won’t be useful ripe because of the fruit flies. It is an excellent and refreshing cold salad dish for summer.
